David and the shepherd’s care
1 Samuel 16:1–13; Psalm 23 · Retold for children
An unexpected choice
Samuel went to Jesse’s family to anoint a king. Jesse’s older sons came before him, but God reminded Samuel that God looks at the heart.
Out with the sheep
The youngest son, David, was still caring for the sheep. Jesse sent for him. David’s ordinary work mattered even before anyone called him a leader.
A new calling
When David arrived, God told Samuel that he was the one. Samuel anointed him. Being the youngest had not kept David outside God’s care.
A shepherd’s picture
Psalm 23, a psalm of David, describes God as a shepherd who guides, provides and stays near. Like sheep needing a shepherd, people need care and guidance.
